COLD VIRUS,CANCER HERO!

After more than a decade ,scientists completed a 3-D atomic-scale map of a virus that causes the common cold.According to Popular Science,it's the largest virus ever mapped. The map could help researchers re-engineer the virus for gene therapy for teatment of cancer and other ailments.Robotic systems, advanced x-ray and years of patience have made this possible.

The adenovirus is responsible for a number of other ailment such as gastrointestinal disorders with its ability to infect many types of cells.

Understanding its structure ,including how it dis-assembles when entering a cell could help scientists use it to treat a number of cancers and even cardiovascular disease.

Using x-ray crystallography, scientists turn large quantities of a virus into crystaline form. The atoms in the crystal diffract the x-ray light, allowing the scientists to reconstruct thediffracted patterns.

Along with improved gene therapies,it's also possible to develop anti-adenovirus drugs preventing the virus from disassembling keeping it from infecting cells.

Summary: Viruses have the ability, once geneticly adapted,to target cancer cells specificaly while leaving the healthy cells unaffected...something radiation and chemo-therapy currently cannot do!

what a cool hub... I had no idea they had mapped the cold virus!!

I was a little suprised that they were manipulating it to target cancer cells,I've heard of them using harmless viruses to carry chemo-type properties that would only target cancer cells, leaving the healthy cells alone,BUT the COLD VIRUS! I guess what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, haha;)Thanks for reading Carolina;)

That was genius. I hope it'll take effect. A cure to various cancer, it's the next big thing. Thanks for the heads up Prof. Acer ;)

The virus's universal ability to access cells gives it the unique bio-mechanical ability to target (with gene modifications)many different types of cancer cells and disrupt their growth, billyaustindillon and twentyfive;)

This is awesome stuff. I really had no idea. Having lost family members to cancer and having a family member now suffering the side-effects of chemo- and radiation-therapy for cancer I can appreciate the value of this kind of research.

Thanks for the Hub.

Love and peace

Yea,tonymac, this type of treatment takes away the use of radiation and I think considered a type of chemo. that has benign side-effects,thanks for reading;)

Thank you Sid,they're getting specificaly to the difference of cancer and healthy cells, and targeting cancer cells without affeting the others;)

This is great! I just bookmarked this to show my daughter tomorrow.

When she was 10 I explained cancer to her. She said that if only they could find a way for the body to look at cancer like a virus it could probably be cured.

I'm thinking this is kind of like that! How cool!

Using viruses to deliver targeted treatment does have the scientific community excited and hopeful...Thanks Vocalcoach.;)
