What Is Nanomedicine

Definitions

Nanomedicine: the medical application of nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology: (sometimes shortened to "nanotech") is the study

of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale .

Anything with the word nano in it is talking about an atom size

(or close to an atom size) structure.

Microprocessor:functions of a computer's central processing unit or

the mind of a computer.

RNA: is like DNA except instead of having two strands RNA has only one.

Nanomedicine News

The research into an area of nanomedicine that includes

molecular-scale computing devices embedded to monitor

health, treat diseases and repair cells is the ultimate goal

for scientists. Made of organic materials, these structures

would be able to communicate the human body's

language of life.

A research group at the California Institute of Technology

has made progress by using DNA nanostructures called

seesaw gates to construct logic circuits similar to those

used in microprocessors.

Caltech researchers have revealed a technique by building

a DNA based structure that when integrated into living

cells would recognize and treat complex diseases based on

a series of biological clues.

Other researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Tech-

nology with an RNA based circuit that was simpler but

could still distinguish modified cancer cells from noncan-

cerous cells and even trigger the cancer cells to self-destruct.

These advances show promising new insights and progress

toward a long term disease free body...

Fascinating, as Spock would say. In the film Fantastic Voyage they shrunk a submarine with doctors on board to microbe size and injected them into a human being. Now with nanotechnology we don't need to shrink people, the tiny nanobots will be servicing our bodies, ooh! :)

Interesting hub Acer. Voted Up!

Really interesting but I wonder if it would work. When you get a transplant of any kind doesn't the body's natural defenses attack it causing it to be rejected wouldn't it be the same for nano technology? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Good point smokinchick...I'm not sure what they mean by using organic materials in nanotech structures.;)

Very interesting! I think it's amazing how cancer treatments are becoming available that only target the specific areas. It's best to avoid chemo whenever possible. Thanks for the info Bryan!:)

Awesome info with great imagery. I do hope that there is some kind of serious "investment" with this type of study.

Exciting article and subject here Byran, thanks for putting this article together so well. Nanotechnology is the future and may well prove to be a medical paradigm shifter. Bryan, have you ever pondered on why elites like say, Bush Sr., Kissinger, and Cheney-what, a bazillion heart attacks there- just to name several, are still around and apparently doing just dandy?

Awesome hub and awesome hopeful news. If nothing else nanomedicine gives hope to so many people struggling with cancer themselves or somebody they know. Awesome videos and pictures that you included. Another winning hub that goes so well with your award winning poetry. Voted up and awesome.

Alaster,Polly and Cogerson:

This stuff is about 20 years before it has any practicality and stem-cell research has the lead along with other research, but it is a more complete and targeted approach to to disease and ultimately extending life expectancy without suffering with it's cell repair promise.;)

Thanks for reading this and have a Happy Thanksgiving!;)

Wow, this is amazing. It is so futuristic. I remember seeing nanobots in Star Trek Voyager where the doctor (who was holographic) installed nano-sized bots into an injured person and the nanobots repaired the damage or injury and then were extracted. I totally believe this is the future of medicine. :)

Mentalist, I was wondering, have you ever tried to have your poems published, perhaps for a science magazine? I know I say it a lot, but you have that talent. There are many out there, get their address, and then send them a few. Copyright them of course. I know you have your degree and everything, but you are an artist. Your work is unique, nothing like I have seen before. I know it is hard to get noticed for your work, but for you, I believe you have that hit factor. Your good peoples pal. I have been a fan from day one and a friend as well. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and now it is off to Christmas. Happy holidays my friend.

Great news, although there is a dark under side to nanotech. My first exposure of nano technology was in 2002 via Michael Crichton's book, "Prey."

I've read many fiction books on the fantasies and dark sides of nanotech....I have a hard time wrapping my head around the physics and mechanics on this science...though it seems with every new science there is a need for constraint and also a need value its promise.;)

Thanks FCEtier.;)

There's a lot of other kinds of research that is more developed such as stem cell and targeted chemo using one's own DNA...but the potential and complete application of nanomedicine to treat every disease and even repair cells will give us the ability to live much longer and without old-age disabilities that go with it....Thank You Fehl For Being Interested.;)

Acer,

Interesting stuff, and to some extent a relief that we have gotten to thius point in science, however my looking towards the past makes me very leary of mans intensions, the past tells you the future so therefore the conclusion is man will find a way to turn something good into something bad. And there is no way around it.

Mentalist acer profile image

Mentalist acer Hub Author 5 months ago

Likely this technology will separate the haves and have nots...and constraint is always an intelligent perspective Bolt.Thank You For The Reflection On The Need For Historical Reasoning.;)

Bryan,

Nanotechnology promises a flawless artificial immune system. It certainly changes things. Conceivably, it could even end death altogether (aside from accidents).

Thanks for sharing this,
